On Joanne Rowling.

August 20, 2024

Dear Breanna Stewart and the NY Liberty,

Did you know that J.K. Rowling is currently being sued in France for aggravated cyber harassment of a CISGENDER FEMALE olympic boxing GOLD MEDALIST, which has led to a targeted and extensive online hate and death threat campaign against her in the past few weeks?

Did you know that J.K. Rowling’s entire online personality has evolved into violent hate speech against transgender people, especially transgender women like me, calling us murderers, rapists and perverts?

Did you know that J.K. Rowling is the single largest financial contributor to TERF hate organizations around the world pushing forward horrific anti-trans legislation like banning puberty blockers in the UK, making it a felony for me to use the women’s bathroom in Florida, banning me from playing the sports I love, and threatening to take away my life saving gender affirming healthcare?

Did you know that these laws have led to the death of 7 transgender people per week in the US this year? Did you know that this includes a 15 year old trans girl, murdered and dismembered in Pennsylvania, or a 17 year old trans girl stabbed 18 times in the Miami Dade Airport? Did you know that Nex Benedict and Brianna Ghey were murdered by their classmates because of these laws?

I understand how much Harry Potter means to millennials like us — I camped outside of my hometown bookstore for the releases of books 1 through 4 because they were my only escape from gender dysphoria and suicidal thoughts. But the real world isn’t Hogwarts — sometimes our heroes end up being villains, and it can be okay to let them go, no matter how much it might hurt.

Stewie, you are one of my heroes. I know in my heart that this was an oversight, or a poorly thought out project based on childhood nostalgia (although Puma is BDS — girl, the boycott!!!), but it would mean so much to your trans fans and the people who love us for you to address this.

Sincerely,

Grace McKenzie
